Questions Before Lessons?
Check out some commonly asked questions about taking lessons.
Beginning Trumpet Students
Questions about starting trumpet, practice, equipment, school band, and what to expect.
-
No! Maryland Trumpet Guy welcomes complete beginners. Lessons are designed to build your skills step-by-step.
-
Many students begin around ages 8 and up, but the right time depends on the student’s interest, focus, and physical comfort with holding and playing the instrument.
-
Great question! Consistent practice is more important than long practice. Beginners often benefit from practicing 10-15 minutes 4-6 days a week to build strength, coordination, and confidence.
-
Progress is measured through improved tone, better endurance, stronger music-reading skills, increased confidence, and the ability to play more challenging music over time.
If a beginner can play more songs over time, they are making progress.
-
Yes. Beginner lessons can help students build the foundation needed for school band participation, auditions, performances, and continued musical growth.
-
The kind of trumpet your child plays is very important. “Click Here to view my “Recommended Equipment” page.
You may seek elsewhere, however please keep the following quote in mind…
“The value of a trumpet is tied to its cost. The old adage of ‘you pay for what you get’”.
-
Students should bring their trumpet, any music or materials they are using, and a willingness to learn. Beginners should also come ready to ask questions and try new skills.
Intermediate & Advanced Trumpet Students
Questions about improving technique, auditions, honor bands, performance, and taking your playing to the next level.
-
Maryland Trumpet Guy offers private instruction for intermediate to advanced trumpet students who want to strengthen their technique, musicianship, confidence, and overall performance ability. Lessons are ideal for students looking to move beyond the basics and develop the skills needed for auditions, performances, ensembles, competitions, and personal growth.
-
A strong trumpet sound begins with efficient technique and proper fundamentals. Maryland Trumpet Guy focuses on concepts such as air support, embouchure efficiency, breath control, mouthpiece placement, and listening skills to help students create a fuller, more consistent, and expressive tone.
-
Absolutely. Maryland Trumpet Guy helps students strengthen their confidence to play trumpet. Your child will be taught not just what to play or why to play it but develop an understanding that they are capable of much more than they currently think they can do.

-
Maryland Trumpet Guy helps students prepare for auditions, solo performances, honor bands, college music programs, recitals, and other performance opportunities. Preparation may include selecting appropriate repertoire, refining technique, improving musical interpretation, and building performance confidence.
-
Intermediate & Advanced instruction focuses on refining the details that separate good playing from exceptional playing. Students work on consistency, artistry, stylistic awareness, advanced technique, and developing their own musical voice rather than simply learning basic notes and rhythms.
-
All students will be given specific assignments for each lesson. Students receive guidance on how to practice efficiently, including warm-ups, technical exercises, repertoire work, and strategies for overcoming challenges. The goal is not just to practice longer, but to practice with greater focus and purpose.
Adult Trumpet Students
Questions for adults starting trumpet or returning after years away.
-
Absolutely not. MTG has taught students aged 7 up to mid-70s. Adults of all ages successfully learn to play the trumpet. Progress depends much more on consistent practice than age.
-
Of course! Many adults return to the trumpet after years—or even decades—away. With consistent practice and the right guidance, you can rebuild your skills and enjoy making music again.
-
That's perfectly fine. Reading music is taught as part of your lessons, and no prior experience is expected.
-
Music reading skills can be refreshed alongside your playing. Many returning adults quickly regain their reading ability with guided practice.
-
Even 15–30 minutes a day can make a significant difference. Consistency is far more important than long practice sessions.
Maryland Trumpet Guy understands most adults are working/raising kids at the same time they are taking lessons. We will work with you to create a solid practice schedule that will help you achieve your goals.
-
Every player is different. Your previous experience, current trumpet-fitness, and practice routine all play a role. Most returning players notice meaningful improvement within a few weeks of regular practice.
-
Returning players often feel rusty, and that's expected. Lessons provide a supportive, encouraging environment where mistakes are simply part of the learning process.
-
New Adults
Having your own instrument is ideal, but if you're still deciding whether the trumpet is right for you, we can discuss rental and purchasing options before you commit.

Returning Adults
Most instruments just need a professional cleaning, fresh valve oil, slide grease, and possibly a few repairs. We'll help you determine what your instrument needs before you begin practicing regularly.
-
Absolutely. Whether you're auditioning or simply want to feel more confident playing with others, lessons can focus on the music and skills you'll need.
Lessons & Practical Questions
Questions about lesson length, practice, equipment, scheduling, materials, and getting started.
-
All lessons start with “Hi, tell me about yourself? What do you like to do outside of playing trumpet?”
After a brief introduction, I’ll ask you what you want to improve on.
We will focus on those things, as well as some key techniques that show all students at any level they can improve.
-
In short:
Trumpet & Mouthpiece
Music you want to work on
Pencil
Notepad if you want to write down notes
-
Students learn most efficiently with consistent lessons. Weekly lessons are optimal; however, some student’s schedules are better to suited have bi-weekly lessons.

-
Students have the best results aiming for 15-30 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week.
Short, consistent practice sessions are much more effective than occasional long ones.
-
I recommend one of two options:
1) Coordinate a time and place that works well for both of you
2) Use a practice mute. What’s a practice mute? These mutes cut the sound off substantially while still allowing you to practice… even when family is asleep!
-
Most lessons include ‘recommended’ method books, exercises, and supplemental materials. Your instructor will explain exactly what you'll need. Some materials are provided.
-
Lesson policies regarding cancellations and make-up lessons will be explained before you begin so expectations are clear.
-
Maryland Trumpet Guy offers online lessons for students of all levels.
To take lessons online, you will need:
A reliable internet connection
A computer with a working camera and microphone
Access to a video-conferencing platform such as Zoom
Most computers have built-in microphones that work well for online lessons, so a separate microphone is not required. If you would prefer to use an external microphone, click here to view the microphone recommended by MTG.
Once your lesson is scheduled, you will receive the information needed to connect to your online lesson.
